Speech Meet

The St. Abe's Speech Meet is a Grammar School tradition! Every student in 1st through 6th grade will select one speech-either a poem, fable, historic oration or passage from Scripture (depending on their grade) to memorize and perform in front of their class on March 22nd. They will be judged on their performance (judging criteria will be sent home soon with options for speeches) and the top performers will have an opportunity to share their piece with the school at our Speech Meet assembly in the afternoon of March 22nd.

St. Abe's Speech Meet reflects our school's love for the Scriptures as well as the rich heritage of poetry, fables & historic oration that make up of the great voices of Western literature. Memorization places a vital role in our Grammar School; it is impressive & often surprising to see our students' capacity for memorizing long pieces of text. Most of the memorizing will happen at home, though students will have an opportunity here and there to do "dress rehearsals" in front of their class to help them get comfortable with public speaking. Speech meets can be very fun, challenging, frustrating, rewarding, terrifying, sharpening, and edifying. Public speaking provides unique challenges and obstacles for our students to work through, enabling them to build confidence as they become more effective communicators for the future. We love to watch students over the years grow and mature through the challenges that are presented with the Speech Meet!
